I think that many people are unaware that many common expressions actually oringinated in the Bible. Today is another example of that. We’ll talk about it in a sec. For our Gospel passage today, we’re back in Luke 21, with Jesus talking about the end of time. I talk often about how Christianity is not a religion for quitters. Why? Because of Jesus’ words at the end of today’s reading. “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” Keep the faith, my friend!
“The handwriting is on the wall.” You’ve heard that before, right? It means the future has been foretold. All the signs point to the outcome. Did you know that expression originated in the Bible? We find it in today’s reading from Daniel 5. King Belshazzar throws a big party, and decides to use the vessels stolen from the Jewish temple to drink out of. Suddenly, a giant hand begins writing on the wall of the palace. The king brings in Daniel to interpret the writing. It is not good for the king.
I think that God gives us signs all the time. Now, they may not be as blatantly obvious as the one he gave the king in today’s first reading. But, more often than not, the handwriting is on the wall for us. Now, this expression usually has a negative connotation. But it needn’t always be so. When we do the right, perhaps the handwriting on the wall can be positive for us. So let’s do the right!
Father, help us to realize that our actions have consequences. Let the handwriting on our wall be positive, as we serve you today. Amen.
