To Whom Do You Belong?

Posted on

Today's reflection is about a topic that doesn't seem to get covered much these days: sin. St. John covers a lot of ground on this in our first reading from 1 John 3.

St. John says, "Whoever sins belongs to the Devil, because the Devil has sinned from the beginning...In this way, the children of God and the children of the Devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother."

None of us would like to think we "belong to the Devil." Yet when we sin, we do. You see, sin is a conscious turning away from God. The beautiful thing (or terrible thing) about the spiritual life is that we get to choose every moment of every day to whom we belong - God or the Devil. To whom will you choose to belong today?

Father, we choose to belong to you. Help us to make that choice every moment of every day. Amen.
